Weather in Paraguay: The Complete Guide

December 27, 20225 min read

In Paraguay, the temperature tends to increase as you travel further north, while rainfall decreases as you move towards the west. The country experiences warm temperatures throughout most of the year, with average annual temperatures exceeding 20°C. In the Eastern Region, the average annual temperature ranges from 20°C to 24°C, while in the Chaco or Western Region, the average annual temperature is around 25°C.

Regional Temperatures:

  • Eastern Region: 20°C to 24°C average annual temperature
  • Chaco/Western Region: Around 25°C average annual temperature
  • Overall average: 24.7°C annually with 2,652.8mm precipitation
  • Fluctuations of Temperature During the Day:

Paraguay weather can tend to fluctuate from warm to hot weather down to cooler temperatures within the same day. Many locals carry a jacket in their car just in case they have to bundle up by end of day after a warm day, so "do as the Romans."

    Humidity Matters:

Paraguay's humidity can make temperatures feel more intense than the thermometer shows. In Asuncion, humidity often exceeds 70-80% during summer months, so a 34°C day can feel like 40°C. Air conditioning is common in modern buildings, shopping centers, and restaurants.

    Hottest Months (December-February):

The weather is particularly hot during these months, with temperatures reaching 32°C to 36°C. If you visit in December, you'll arrive just in time for high temperatures and low-key holiday celebrations.

    January and February:

These are considered the hottest months, with average daily temperatures ranging from 32°C to 34°C (90°F to 93°F). If you are not used to high temperatures, consider visiting during a cooler time of year.

March to November (Best Time to Visit):

Pleasant and mostly warm weather. Daytime temperatures can be hot, but evenings tend to be cooler - perfect for exploring city plazas. Rain, if it occurs, is usually short and intense.

    Regional Differences: The Chaco:

The Western Region (Chaco) experiences more extreme temperatures than the Eastern Region. Summer temperatures can exceed 45°C, while winters can drop to near freezing at night. Most expats settle in the Eastern Region.

    Festivals and Events:

  • August 15: Asunción Day - celebrates the founding of the capital in 1537
  • March 1: Heroes' Day - honors military and President Marshal Francisco Solano López
  • May 15: Independence Day - commemorates independence from Spanish rule in 1811
  • June 24: San Juan Festival - solstice festival with bonfires and pyrotechnical displays
